Problem solving is the key to successful projects. When our broadcast client approached us requesting the harmonisation of two power supplies which needed to be accomplished without any disturbance to broadcasting services, we worked hard to find the right solution.
Our broadcast client had acquired a whole site that had originally been occupied by two separate companies, resulting in two separate power supplies and generator support systems. We needed to link the two buildings from the most recent MCCB LV (Moulded Case Circuit Breaker / Low Voltage) switch panelboard.
As with all of our industrial electrical services, we first conducted an onsite survey. This helped us identify a cross-site route to install a new high level cable management system in the existing buildings and externally.
Core holes were drilled into the building structure to enable the cables to be passed through. The route took the cables over existing sensitive equipment, through several rooms, across the site, over a single storey roof and into the second building. Four SWA XLPE cables were run (two ‘A’ supply in parallel and two ‘B’ supply in parallel).
Ice protection was fitted onto the cable ladder and bespoke cowls were designed, manufactured and installed to protect the cables from falling ice from the overhead mast and supports in the winter months (This is standard practice on exposed broadcast sites). Bespoke adaption boxes were designed, manufactured and fitted to the older LV switch panelboards for glanding the cables and safe connection onto the busbars.
Broadcast services were successfully maintained throughout the project by switching the power supply from one side to the other through planned works and notifications, allowing for safe access and connection to each side busbar. The new supplies were connected, tested and energised one side at a time.
The project was completed successfully with no unscheduled interruption to existing broadcast services and both Transcool Systems and the client were extremely pleased with the outcome.
